An Insight into Nahj al-Balāgha through Word and Number
📖 "The believer is pure-hearted and noble, while the evildoer is deceitful and ignoble." — Hadith
🌿 Mapping the Words & Numbers
Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning | Abjad | Reduction |
---|---|---|---|---|
المُؤْمِنُ | al-mu’min | Believer, faithful, trustworthy | 167 | 5 |
غُرٌّ | ghurrun | Pure-hearted, innocent, guileless | 1200 | 3 |
كَرِيمٌ | karīm | Noble, generous, honorable | 270 | 9 |
وَالفَاجِرُ | wa-l-fājir | Immoral, boundary-breaker | 321 | 6 |
خِبٌّ | khibb | Deceitful, scheming | 602 | 8 |
لَئِيمٌ | la’īm | Vile, ignoble, base | 90 | 9 |
✨ The Mirror of Nine
When we pause, something astonishing emerges:
-
Karīm (270 → 9): completion expressed as generosity, nobility, and divine alignment.
-
La’īm (90 → 9): completion expressed as vileness, ignobility, and corruption.
The same root number — 9, the number of culmination — produces two opposite destinies. This is no accident, but a spiritual cipher hidden in the very structure of the language.
🧬 The Womb (2) + Knowledge (7) = Completion (9)
In symbolic reflection:
-
2 (Womb / rahim): inherited lineage, emotional foundation.
-
7 (Knowledge / ʿilm): higher faculties, divine connection.
-
2 + 7 = 9: the complete human being.
Yet completion can manifest in two ways:
-
Illumined: The womb refined, the mind enlightened → karīm.
-
Darkened: The womb unrefined, the intellect deficient → la’īm.
Both arrive at “9,” but one as a fragrant bloom, the other as rot.
🔁 Reflection
This hadith is not just a contrast between the believer and the evildoer — it’s a diagnostic of the soul. Every person carries within them the blueprint for nobility and ignobility. The outcome depends on how they refine their inherited tendencies and illuminate their intellect.
The believer (al-mu’min) embodies purity (ghurrun) and generosity (karīm).
The corrupt (al-fājir) embodies deception (khibb) and ignobility (la’īm).
The message is clear: what you choose to cultivate in the womb of your being and the knowledge you allow to shape you will determine your final culmination.
🌌 Closing Thought
The beauty of Imam Ali’s wisdom in Nahj al-Balāgha is that it operates on many levels at once — ethical, spiritual, psychological, and even numerical. What looks like a simple description of believer vs. evildoer is in fact a mirror of the human potential for completion in two directions.
In the language of abjad, the Divine leaves us not just words, but equations of the soul.
💡 Perhaps every recitation of Qur’an, hadith, or ziyārah is a step along this DNA-helix of the Thaqalayn — weaving light into our being, so that our 9 becomes karīm, not la’īm.
